About Arunachalam
Annamalaiyar Temple, also called Arunachaleswarar, represents Agni — fire — among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, making it a natural counterpart to Srikalahasti's Vayu lingam. The temple complex is one of the largest in India.
The hill itself, Arunachala, is the focus of Girivalam: a 14-kilometre circumambulation walked by enormous crowds on full-moon nights. At Karthigai Deepam a beacon is lit on the summit and is visible for miles.
What you'll see
- Annamalaiyar (Arunachaleswarar) Temple — the Agni lingam
- Girivalam around Arunachala hill
- Karthigai Deepam, when the hilltop beacon is lit
Good to know
- Full-moon nights and Karthigai Deepam draw very heavy crowds — plan the timing deliberately.
- The distance makes this a full day out, or an overnight stay if you would rather not rush it.
- The route crosses into Tamil Nadu, so state permit charges apply.
